In the quarterfinal of the Women’s Big East Tournament at Mohegan Sun Arena on Saturday afternoon, the #4 ranked Wildcats lost to the #5 ranked Golden Eagles, 50-48. Villanova now falls to 18-12 on the year, and Marquette adds to their record to make it 23-7.

In the first half, there was back-and-forth action, with no team being able to secure a big lead. Marquette went up 21-16, which was their largest lead of the half after Villanova was previously up 8-3. Both teams had to play significant defense to stop the other team from scoring, which worked. Neither team could hit their shots; Villanova went 11 out of 41 in shooting, and Marquette shot 12 out of 32.

In the second half, Villanova went up for the first time off a shot from Zanai Jones. The score was 31-28 with nearly 5 minutes left of the quarter, but after that, Villanova missed significantly and didn’t score at all for the rest of the quarter. Due to Villanova’s inability to hit shots, Marquette capitalized on that and went up 37-31 to close up the quarter. Liza Karlen was a critical factor in Marquette’s scoring this half.

In the fourth quarter, Villanova came out firing to score eight straight points, making it 39-31. Kaitlyn Oriehl and Maddie Weber both had lay-ups, and Olsen contributed by making two shots in the scoring run. Then, the Golden Eagles bounced back and went up from a shot from Rose Nkumu, scoring with nearly 5 minutes left to play. Villanova then went on a lead, scoring 45-43 with close to 3 minutes left off a shot from Olsen. Marquette tied it up and eventually scored a three-pointer to have them lead 48-45 with nearly 2 minutes left. Olsen hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to 5-48, but she couldn’t hit her lay-up as the time expired. Villanova went on to lose the game 50-48.
