After back-to-back losses, Villanova rejoins the win column with a rout against Maine.
The Offense Continues Their Success
The Wildcats earned their third win of the season following a big effort from QB Connor Watkins. Watkins, 13-16 with 255 yards and four touchdowns, had his best game of the season since becoming the starting quarterback at the beginning of the season. The Wildcats also combined for 211 rushing yards. The duo of TD Ayo-Durojaiye and Jalen Jackson led the ground game while Jaaron Hayek was Villanova’s leading receiver with 159 yards and four trips to the end zone.
How was the Defense?
The big question heading into this game against the Black Bears was the defense. Villanova’s defense improved their tackling on Saturday and held the Black Bears to just 20 points. Maine QB, Joe Fagnano, completed 24 of his 38 passes for 192 yards, but threw a fourth-quarter interception. Villanova’s rushing defense also improved by only allowing 108 yards to Maine’s rushing attack.
The Road Ahead
Villanova will have a bye week before heading to Richmond to take on the Spiders on October 15th. The Richmond Spiders are 3-1 overall and 1-0 in CAA conference play. Richmond’s QB, Reece Udinski from North Wales, PA, has thrown for 1,116 yards this season with 11 touchdowns and only one interception.
As they prepare for the Spiders, the Wildcats are currently 1-1 in CAA play and 3-2 overall.
