Written by on March 18, 2024

This past Saturday, the Villanova Wildcats beat Monmouth 12-11. With the win, Villanova is 4-3 on the year, and Monmouth is 3-4 with the loss.

In the first half, back-and-forth action saw Monmouth scoring first. Villanova’s Matt Licata was a significant presence, scoring the two goals to shorten Monmouth’s lead to 4-2. Villanova did not stop there, though. They scored four straight goals to make them lead 6-4 going into the half. Villanova did not give up and did not let Monmouth gain control from their early dominance.

In the second half, Villanova’s Dan Martin contributed to the scoring run, scoring a goal to extend their lead. But Monmouth then responded with three straight goals, tying the game at seven a piece. Villanova’s Colin Michener and Licata scored near the end of the third quarter to create their lead, 9-7, going into the fourth quarter. Monmouth then scored another three straight goals to take the lead.

At this point, Villanova was trailing 10-9, and a goal was much needed. Sure enough, Matt Licata scored a goal, and Luke Raymond contributed with another goal after that to give the Wildcats a lead of 11-10. Then, Michener scored another goal to give the Wildcats a further lead. Monmouth then scored one more, but they couldn’t come back against Villanova.

The Wildcats won the game 12-11 in high-paced action.

Villanova will now play against Navy in Maryland on Tuesday at 7:00 pm.
