Villanova Set for Tough Road Test Against No. 6 UConn | WBB Preview

Written by on January 22, 2025

Villanova, PA – The Villanova Wildcats are set to face one of their toughest challenges of the season as they travel to Gampel Pavilion to take on the No. 6-ranked UConn Huskies in a pivotal Big East matchup on Wednesday night. This marks the second and final regular-season meeting between the two teams, with the Wildcats looking to avenge their 81-60 loss to the Huskies on January 5.

Villanova (10-9, 4-3 Big East) enters the contest tied with DePaul for fourth place in the conference standings. Meanwhile, UConn (17-2, 8-0 Big East) remains unbeaten in league play and sits atop the standings alongside Creighton. The Wildcats will need a complete performance on both ends of the floor to contend with the powerhouse Huskies.

A major storyline heading into this matchup is the return of UConn star guard Paige Bueckers, who missed time with a knee sprain suffered in the previous game against Villanova. Bueckers recently reached the 2,000-point milestone in UConn’s dominant win over Seton Hall. Additionally, Aubrey Griffin, sidelined for much of the season with an ACL injury, made her return last weekend, further bolstering the Huskies’ deep roster.

For Villanova, freshman guard Jasmine Bascoe and forward Denare Carter will be key contributors as the Wildcats aim to disrupt UConn’s offensive rhythm. The Wildcats will need a strong defensive effort to slow down the Huskies’ high-powered attack while capitalizing on their own scoring opportunities, particularly from beyond the arc and in the paint.

Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at Gampel Pavilion, with the game airing live on SNY. Villanova will look to pull off a statement upset and build momentum as they push deeper into conference play.
