Glance at the Teams
After losing a tough game in the second half to DePaul on Friday, Villanova heads back to the Finn for a Monday afternoon matchup on Martin Luther King Jr. Day against Georgetown. The Wildcats have lost three straight games and have not won a home game since December 21st against St. John’s. Villanova is 8-10 overall, and just 2-5 in Big East play. Villanova’s last win came against Georgetown (73-57) on January 4th at Capital One Arena. This game against the Hoyas will be the Wildcats’ 5th game in 13 days.
Georgetown has lost eight straight games and have yet to win a Big East matchup in seven attempts. The Hoyas are 5-13 overall and 0-5 away from their home arena. Throughout the season, Primo Spears leads the Hoyas in scoring by averaging 15.3 points per game.
Villanova leads Georgetown in the overall series record, 47-45. Villanova is 24-15 in home games against Georgetown. Also, the Wildcats have won the last three matchups against the Hoyas.
Last Matchup: January 4th
In their last matchup, the Wildcats outscored the Hoyas by 16 points in the second half to win, 73-57. Villanova shot 42.6% from the field while Georgetown only made 35.6% of their shot attempts. Caleb Daniels led all scorers with 20 points, and Mark Armstrong was 4-9 with 14 points off of the bench.
The Hoyas leading scorer was Jordan Riley, a sophomore from Brentwood, NY, who scored 12 points with five rebounds. Akok Akok was 5-9 from the field and 1-3 from behind the arc for 11 total points. Akok also led the game with 10 rebounds for the Hoyas.
Injury Update:
After suffering a strained left hamstring in the January 4th win against Georgetown, Jordan Longino has not appeared in a game since then. According to the Wildcats, he will be re-evaluated later this month.
Justin Moore began practicing a couple of weeks ago for Villanova, but there still is no timetable for his return.
Nnanna Njoku was also not available for Friday’s game against Butler.
