On Saturday afternoon, the Villanova Wildcats beat Big East opponent Marquette in a 55-52 win on the road. The Wildcats now improve to 15-8 on the year and 8-4 in the Big East, and the Golden Eagles now fall to 18-6 overall and 7-6 in Big East play. Lucy Olsen led Villanova with 19 points, and Mackenzie Hare led Marquette with 16.
It was a back-and-forth battle for much of the game, much of what was expected to happen, especially in a Big East Conference game. The big push that led the Wildcats to push through was when Villanova’s Bella Runyan went on an 8-point tear at the end of the 3rd quarter to make it 46-42. Previously, Marquette held a close lead. Runyan’s scoring span included two three-pointers and one jumper.
But, even with the late push from Villanova, the momentum could not be carried into the start of the 4th quarter. That is where the Golden Eagles went on a 7-0 run to widen their lead to 49-46. Jordan King led the way for Marquette during this span.
Villanova then took the lead. Lucy Olsen made two jumpers and one free throw, combining for 5 points, to give the Wildcats the advantage and have them lead 51-49 with nearly 5 minutes left of the quarter. Then, Marquette struck off a three from Jordan King, causing them to go up 52-51. Shortly after, Villanova’s Zanai Jones made a lay-up to give the Wildcats a 53-52 lead. At this point, the intensity was high, and the game was back and forth, much like the game up to this point.
No points were scored for nearly 4:30 minutes. Maddie Weber from the Wildcats then hit two free throws to widen Villanova’s lead to 55-52 with close to 8 seconds left. After one last chance to tie the game from the Golden Eagles, they couldn’t connect on it. Villanova won the game 55-52.
Villanova will play Georgetown on Tuesday at 11 a.m.
