Villanova WBB Gets Back on the Win Track, Beats DePaul 96-64

On Sunday afternoon, the Villanova Wildcats beat the DePaul Blue Demons 95-64. Villanova now improves to 13-7 overall, 6-3 in Big East play, and DePaul falls to 10-12 overall and 2-7 in league play.

First Quarter: All Offense

Villanova dominated the first quarter offensively. They found themselves up 24-20 after the quarter. The Wildcats went 45% from the field, going 10 for 22, whereas DePaul was 53% from the field, going 8 for 15. Lucy Olsen was dominant in the first quarter, totaling 10 points, whereas the Blue Demons were led by Katlyn Gilbert, who totaled 7 points.

Second Quarter: Villanova Sustains Pressure

Villanova came out firing on all cylinders at the end of the second quarter, going on a 12-2 run, which led the Wildcats to go into the intermission with a 44-32 lead after previously being neck and neck with the Blue Demons for much of the first half. Maddie Weber had 4 points in this run, both from lay-ups. Bella Runyan had 5 points, making a lay-up and a three, and Zanai Jones had 3 points, making a lay-up and free throw. At the end of the quarter and leading into the intermission at the half, Villanova went 17 for 33, shooting close to 52%, whereas the Blue Demons shot around 40% combined.

Third Quarter: Villanova Dominates

Villanova kept up their pressure on DePaul and came out to a dominating 52-32 lead early after an 8-0 run to start the quarter. This came at around three minutes into the quarter. Both Bella Runyan and Zanai Jones made one three-pointer a piece, and Lucy Olsen hit a jumper for two points to contribute to this span. Later in the quarter, Lucy Olsen hit two back-to-back shots to widen the lead to 65-46 against the Blue Demons, allowing the Wildcats to have some breathing room and confidence to head into the fourth quarter.

Fourth Quarter: Villanova Closes Out Game

Villanova continued their impressive scoring and dominant play throughout this quarter, where they saw many players connect on shots to contribute to a commanding 35-point lead over the Blue Demons to make the final score 95-64. Lucy Olsen and Maddie Weber led the way in scoring for the Wildcats, but it was an overall strong team win.

Looking Forward:

Villanova looks to continue their dominant play against #8 UConn Huskies in a game at the Finneran Pavilion on Wednesday night at 6:30 PM. This will be a good test for the Wildcats as they head into their games for February.
