Villanova WBB Loses Against #10 UConn

On Wednesday night, the Villanova Wildcats fell to #10 UConn, 67-46. Villanova now drops to 17-11 on the year and 10-7 in the Big East Conference, and the Huskies, with the win, are now 25-5 overall and 17-10 in the conference.

In the first quarter, UConn came out to a 10-2 lead, dominating the play for the first few minutes. The Wildcats then fought back and scored 10 straight points, allowing them to lead for the first time in the game. Most of the points in the scoring run came from Kaitlyn Orihel, who had 6 points. But the Huskies pulled away with a 15-10 lead at the end of the quarter.

In the second quarter, UConn came out dominating, going on a 16-6 run, widening their lead to 31-18 with nearly 4 minutes left to play. Both Bueckers and Edwards contributed significantly to the Huskies’ run. The rest of the quarter was primarily stagnant, with UConn coming away with a 35-24 lead at the end going into the half. Zanai Jones was incredible for Villanova in this half, scoring 10 of the team’s 14 points.

Most of the third quarter was back and forth, with little action. But, in the fourth quarter, Villanova made a dominant run to make UConn’s lead closer. It was previously 49-37, and Villanova made it 51-44 with this run. This occurred with nearly 8 minutes left of the quarter. Following a timeout, UConn came back firing, scoring 10 straight points to widen their massive lead to 61-44. Villanova could not come back after that dominant run by UConn.

Oriehl paced Villanova with 15 points, and Bueckers led UConn with 31.

Villanova looks to beat the DePaul Blue Demons at the Finneran Pavilion in their final regular season game this year on March 3.
